Welcome to Mrs. Tucker's 3rd Grade!
The classroom is my favorite place to be. I love assisting the students with their learning and facilitating their exploration of the world around them. I am a true believer of being a life long learner and tell the students that I learn something new each day. Spending my day with the students is truly a gift from God. I enjoy the happiness and love they bring into the classroom daily.
Third Grade curriculum is a big change from Second Grade curriculum. It is much more involved and might be a little stressful in the beginning of the year for your child. We will be having more tests and quizzes this year. It is very important that you encourage your child to study at home if they know of a test coming up. It is NOT recommended that your child only study for a test the night before it is to be given. They will not retain the information if they are “cramming” the night before.
Religion- Our Religion book this year focuses on the Church and its community. As Teachers, we bring our Catholic Faith and its Christian values to every subject we teach throughout the day together. We take advantage of every opportunity that may arise to share with the children what Jesus has taught us, and how Jesus would want us to act. We also focus on the rosary and the mysteries. We also focus on strengthening their knowledge that they received last year while preparing for the First Holy Communion.
Language Arts- Our Language Arts curriculum consists of close reads of novels, Vocabulary, English grammar, The Writing Process, Spelling, Poem of the Month, and Handwriting. I have designed a program that consists of recognizing the Core Six Strategies;
Reading for meaning
Compare and contrast
Circle of knowledge
Write to learn
These are essential strategies needed to grasp and teach the Common Core Curriculum.
Math- We have adopted new math books this year. They are from the publisher of Houghton Mifflin and the series is Go Math. There are many components to this new math program including a personal math trainer that children will be able to access online and at home in order to reinforce the concepts that are covered in class. This new program will aid us in implementing the National Common Core Standards.
Social Studies- We will be learning about our land, the United States, and the first Americans. The children will be given new insights into their communities and will make connections to the larger world. Students will explore geographic, social, and economic aspects of their world.
Science- Our science books this year focus primarily on living things, matter energy, the sun, and the planets. There is a lot to learn this year in science and I need you help in encouraging your child to bring his/her science book home often to read independently. The number of experiments and activities we will have this year will depend on the class performance and the time allowed. The children will be provided with experiences to develop, practice and apply critical thinking and process skills.
Computer- I will integrate computer use throughout the curriculum. We will work on The Internet and with various software programs that will complement the current studies in which we are engaged.
Executive Functioning Skill-As a school we have decided to focus on executive functioning. In Third grade we explore many executive functioning skills, but our main focus will be self-regulation. This will focus on controlling our body, thinking before we talk, being responsible, and how to plan ahead.
